The Landmines Number Decreased To be 21.8 Million
L.S.C. Asks for National Committee for Struggling Landmines in Egypt

Landmines struggle center (L.S.C.) monitored the death of 4 persons and the injury of the fifth in 2 landmine accidents during April, 99.

The first accident was in 4/4/99 evening in East Tunnel Area, South Sinai. Ahmed Abd El Mohsen (18 years - worker), his brother Shaaloof Abd El Mohsen (17 years - worker), Ahmed Fathi (20 years - worker) and Mohamed Rashad (21 years - worker) died when a landmine exploded during their work in a new road named El Qantara - El Arish in the middle section of Sinai.

The second accident was in 12/4/99 at 11 A.M. on the highway at Km. 3 area, Hurgada City, Red Sea. Hamdy Amin El Masry (18 years - Mechanic) lost his left hand, his right eye and many wounds in his face, legs and fragments on his head as a result of the landmine's explosion. When his car broke down in the accident's area and he walked to a sandy area waiting for help.

It should be mentioned that L.S.C. announced that there were some movements for landmines and non-explosive ordinances in many areas in the Western Desert and Sinai including Hurgada last February because of the rains. That was mentioned in the 1st of April L.S.C. Press Release.

On April 25, Egypt celebrated the day of Sinai. During this occasion L.S.C. renew its request for Israel to bring the maps of the landmines fields which were planted by the Israeli forces during their withdrew from Sinai. Especially with that increase in landmine victims in Sinai.

L.S.C. announces that the efforts that were done since 1995 till now results in Clearance of approximately 1.2 millions mines. That means the number of landmines in Egypt decreased from approximately 23 million to approximately 21.8 million (16.7 million in Western Desert & 5.1 million in Eastern Desert) and the landmines' area became 248,000 Hectare instead of 288,000 Hectare.

As a part of its long-term plan, L.S.C. asked for establishing a national committee for struggling landmines. Mr. Ayman Sorour Executive Director of L.S.C. offered this proposal to the meeting of defense and national security committee to the Egyptian people assembly.

On the occasion of the first meeting of states party to antipersonnel Mines convention in Maputo - Mozambique May 3-7. L.S.C. calls upon Countries, International Organizations and Domestic Organizations to offer every possible help to activate the specialists program in struggling landmines in Egypt.

Thirteen Landmines’ Victims in the Last Three Months

Landmines Struggle Center (Egypt) monitored the death of 5 persons and the injury of 8 as a result of 6 landmines' explosion accidents in several areas of Egypt in the last three months.

The first accident was on 16 / 1 / 99 at 11 a.m. in Wadi El Furaq, El Wahat El Dakhla-East El Oynat Rood, El Wadi El Gadeed. When a landmine exploded in the car number 32818 which was driven by 6 tourists (2 Germans & 4 Austrians). The 2 Germans were injured and the car has been destroyed.

The second accident was on 14 / 2 / 99 at 2:30 p.m. in El Qadesiat area, 5 Km. to the west of the 10th of Ramadan City, El Sharquia. Ali Mahmoud Omar (32 years - worker) lost his lift hand, broken fingers in his right foot and hand, a bandon and many fragments all around his body as a result of the explosion. That happened during his work in water line between El Shorouq City - 10th of Ramadan City.

The third accident was on 23 / 2 / 99 in Ghobaat El Bouss area, 55 Km. to south of Suez City, Suez. Unknown person died and Mosaad Ibrahim (51 years - worker) was injured in stomach and chest. That was during their working in the area of the accident.

The fourth accident was on 2 / 3 / 99 evening in Beet Land area, piece 314 Abd El Baset village, Borg El Arab City, Alexandria. Abd El Fatah Mahrous and his son Mohamed were injured when they fired 2 fires during their work in their land. They have been injured with fragments, sings and wounds all around their bodies.

The fifth accident was on 7 / 3 / 99 at 3 p.m. in Belqaas city, Daquahlia. Mohamed Soliman (23 years - engineer) died when he was playing with a metal can - he found in Marsa Matrouh last summer.

The sixth accident was on 12 / 3 / 99 at 4:30 p.m. in Wadi El Foraq area, Ras Sedr City, South Sinai. Arabi Khaleel, Anwar Khaleel and Fathy Abd El Aziz were dead. Abdou Abd El Rasoul had a broken arm and head jar, Saad Messad injured in his back. That happened when a landmine exploded in the car which was carrying them to their work.

L.S.C. Egypt also monitored the movement of landmines in the Red Sea and Sinai because of the rains in these areas during February 99. The monitoring and documentation of L.S.C. for the accidents resulted that: Most of the accidents' areas don't have warning signs for landmines, the lake of medical care in the areas of landmines and the misinformation of the landmines problem in Egypt - especially the accidents' areas.

L.S.C. calls upon the international community, international organizations and presidia organizations to share in activating the specialist programs which related to landmines' problem in Egypt.
